What is intravenous anesthesia?
Intravenous anesthesia provides a way of effectively completing dental care while your child is comfortable, pain free, and asleep.
Who should receive dental care with intravenous anesthesia?
Children with severe anxiety and/or the inability to relax are candidates for intravenous anesthesia. Usually, these children are very young, anxious or physically/mentally compromised.
Is intravenous anesthesia safe for my child?
Our anesthesiologists are experienced health care providers, residency trained in the delivery of intravenous anesthesia. They are responsible for the continuous anesthesia management, comfort, and care for your child.
Our anesthesiologists utilize the most up to date medicines, monitoring, and equipment in order to provide quality anesthesia care:
- blood pressure
- electrocardiography
- pulse oximetry
- precordial stethoscope
- respiratory monitor
Does my insurance cover the cost of anesthesia?
Many insurance providers
do not cover the cost for anesthesia for dental treatment. For this reason, it is important for
you to contact your medical and dental provider prior to your appointment.
Is payment for anesthesia due the day of treatment?
Yes. You are responsible for the payment in full the day of treatment, regardless of your insurance coverage. The fee for anesthesia is based upon the dentist's treatment time and recovery.
What special considerations are needed on the day of the intravenous anesthesia appointment?
Prior to your child's appointment, the anesthesiologist will contact you in order to throughly review your child's medical history. A limited physical examination will be performed the day of the visit.
On the day of your child's appointment there are several recommendations. You will be informed about food and fluid intake guidelines prior to the appointment. It is important
not to have a meal before anesthesia. It is important to know that if your child is sick, please contact our office. Usually, minimal discussion with your child regarding the appointment may reduce his or her anxiety.
Your child will be tired and sleepy following intravenous anesthesia. You will need to return home and plan minimal activity for your child until the next day. Your child may return to his/her regular routine the following day.
